On a mountaintop in Danyang, North Chungcheong Province, you run a few steps with an instructor, your feet leave the ground, and for about ten minutes you hang in the air above a town wrapped by the horseshoe bend of the Namhan River. Back on the ground, a glass skywalk over a river cliff, three rock peaks rising from morning mist and a market alley lined up for black garlic fried chicken are all within 20 minutes by car.

At a glance
- Why everyone goes up: In the first half of this year, visitors to Danyang’s main attractions rose by about 258,000 over last year, and about 247,000 of that increase came from one place, the Yangbangsan Observatory, home to a paragliding launch site. Over the same period the Mancheonha Skywalk lost about 16,900 visitors (analysis by Danyang County Council member Jang Hyo-jin, Newsis, October 22, 2026). The article put it down to one-off events like paragliding competitions, but it’s clear where people in Danyang are heading right now.
- When to go: The second and third weeks of November keep the last of the mountain foliage and clear air for good flying visibility. The launch sites sit above 600 m, though, and are much colder than town. Flights are decided each morning depending on wind and rain, so put your flight on the first morning and keep the second day as a backup.
- From Incheon Airport: Take the AREX airport railroad to Seoul Station (about an hour on the all-stop train), then subway Line 1 to Cheongnyangni Station, and catch a KTX-Eum train to Danyang Station (below).
- From Myeongdong: Take Line 4 to Dongdaemun Station and transfer to Line 1 for Cheongnyangni Station. Pay with your T-money transit card.
- By train: KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni to Danyang takes 1 hour 27 minutes (the 6:27 a.m. train arrives 7:54) and costs 18,600 won (about $14.00) (Naver blog, October 28, 2026, and the Ministry of Land’s public timetable data). The ITX-Maeum is 14,900 won (about $11.20). Danyang Station is outside town, so take a taxi for about 10 minutes and around 9,000 won (about $6.80) to the center (Naver blog, 2026).
- A free train ticket: During Korail’s autumn “Travel Month” (October 1 to November 30), if you visit a depopulating region like Danyang on the “Local Love Rail Trip” free-travel product in the Korail Talk app and scan QR codes at designated attractions, Korail returns your full fare as a coupon for your next ticket. Bookings cover trips through November 28, and regular tickets don’t qualify (Maeil Shinmun, October 16, 2026). In Danyang, the QR spots are on the wall of the Dodamsambong tourist information center, at the Mancheonha Skywalk ticket kiosks, at the Gosu Cave and Suyanggae Light Tunnel ticket offices, and at the Danyang River Jando entrance (Naver blog, October 22, 2026).
- Getting around town: The Danyang Tourism Corporation’s Haengbok Nadeuri Bus links the intercity bus terminal, Gugyeong Market and the Mancheonha Skywalk seven times a day. It’s 1,650 won (about $1.20) by transit card, leaving the Gugyeong Market stop at 9:45 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 2:05 p.m. (Naver blog, October 28, 2026). It doesn’t stop at Danyang Station.
- Avoid Tuesdays: The Suyanggae Light Tunnel is closed every Tuesday, and the Mancheonha zipline and alpine coaster stop for equipment checks on Tuesdays (Naver blog, 2026).
Top 10 things to do in Danyang
1. A 10-minute tandem paragliding flight (experience)
Paragliding in Danyang is a two-seat ride with an instructor steering behind you, so first-timers are fine. There are two launch sites: Dusan Village in Gagok-myeon (around Cafe San), where most operators gather, and Yangbangsan in Danyang-eup, right next to the observatory. In the air you see the Namhan River sweeping around Danyang town and the ridges of Sobaeksan Mountain all at once.
- Prices (by operator, summer 2026): Korea Para’s basic 5–8 minute flight is 90,000 won (about $67.90), plus 20,000 won (about $15.10) for video; the extreme 8–12 minute flight is 130,000 won (about $98.10, video included); VIP, 20 minutes or more, is 200,000 won (about $151.00) (Naver blog, August 8, 2026). Cafe San Paragliding’s Basic is 90,000 won and Dynamic 120,000 won (about $90.60) (Naver blog, visited August 14, 2026). Danyang Yangbangsan Paragliding’s BASIC 8–10 minutes is 80,000 won (about $60.40), with video 20,000 won extra (Naver blog, August 2026).
- Time needed: About 25 minutes to arrive, change and wait, around 10 minutes in the air, 25 minutes back by car after landing; 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 40 minutes in total, including checking your photos (Naver blog, August 8, 2026).
- Booking: Through Naver booking or by phone, with a 10,000-won (about $7.50) deposit per person. Korea Para offers free pickup from Danyang Station, the intercity bus terminal, Gugyeong Market, Dodamsambong and more, but you need to request it when you book, not on the day (Naver blog, August 8, 2026).
- Weight and what to bring: The weight limit is roughly 35–100 kg and varies by operator (Naver blog, 2026). Sneakers and socks are a must. You wear a flight suit over your clothes, so in November put a thin padded jacket underneath. Helmets and gloves are provided. If you get motion sickness, bring medicine: the spiral turns just before landing are dizzying.
- Tips: They transfer about 15 minutes of video to your phone, so clear some storage. One June visitor found 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the busiest time (Naver blog, August 8, 2026). An October 2026 Channel A report showed some flights landing in town parking lots and riverbank lots, so ask when booking whether the operator lands on its own private lawn. It gives you one more way to choose.

2. Sunset and night views from Yangbangsan Observatory (photo spot)
From the round observatory on the 664 m summit of Yangbangsan, you see the Namhan River curling around Danyang town in every direction. Paragliders launch one after another from the site right next to it, so you can catch both in one frame, and after sunset the riverside lights come on. Danyang County promotes it as one of its “three best night views” (Naver blog, October 25, 2026).
- Price: Free. You can’t go inside the observatory building; you look out from the terrace around it.
- Getting there: About 20 minutes by car to the P1 and P2 parking lots just below the summit, on a narrow, steep road (Naver blog, October 25, 2026). Without a car, book a round-trip taxi.
- Tip: The mountain road has almost no streetlights, so go up before sunset and stay through to the night view. Don’t go up in rain or snow.

3. Watching takeoffs from the Cafe San terrace (photo spot)
Friends who don’t fly have something to do too. Sit on the terrace of Cafe San, 600 m up right next to the Dusan launch site, and every few minutes a paraglider runs down the slope in front of you and lifts into the sky (Naver blog, October 2026). Most of the Danyang photos on Instagram come from this terrace.
- Tip: By afternoon it’s crowded even inside. The road to the top is winding and steep, so if you’re not a confident driver, take a taxi or your operator’s pickup.
4. The glass deck of the Mancheonha Skywalk (sight)
A spiral observation tower stands on Jeokseongbong Peak above a Namhan River cliff. From the top, three glass-floored walkways stretch out toward the river, with the water and Danyang town under your feet. The fact that visitors fell in the first half of the year can also mean shorter lines for travelers.
- Price: Adults 4,000 won (about $3.00), ages 6–18 and 65+ 3,000 won (about $2.30), preschoolers free (Naver blog, October 28, 2026).
- Hours: From November, winter hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with ticket sales ending at 4 p.m. (Naver blog, 2026). Parking is free.
- Getting up: You reach the tower from the ticket office only by shuttle bus. In peak season the wait can run over an hour, so go right at opening or late in the afternoon (Naver blog, October 28, 2026).
- Tip: There’s also a one-way monorail for 3,000 won (about $2.30). The Korail refund QR code is at the ticket kiosk office.

5. The Mancheonha zipline and alpine coaster (experience)
If you want to fly one more time, take the zipline next to the skywalk. You glide down two 980 m cables without power, about 120 m above the river (Naver blog, July 2026). The alpine coaster is a one-person sled you brake yourself as it runs down the mountainside.
- Prices: Zipline 30,000 won (about $22.60, height 135 cm and up); alpine coaster 18,000 won (about $13.60; not for children under 48 months or adults 65 and over) (Naver blog, 2026).
- Hours: Winter hours for the rides were 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a daily check from noon to 12:30, in 2025 (Naver blog, 2025), so check this year’s hours on site. They’re closed Tuesdays for equipment checks.
-
Tip: Seeing the skywalk tower first and then riding the zipline is the easiest route.

6. The 1.2 km Danyang River Jando cliff walk (experience)
This 2 m-wide boardwalk is bolted to the river cliff from below the Mancheonha Skywalk to Sangjin Bridge in Danyang town. Of its 1.2 km, 800 m runs over rock walls right above the water, so the river flows under your feet (Naver blog, October 28, 2026).
- Price and time: There’s no posted fee, and the walk takes about 30 minutes. A barrier-free path continues to the skywalk, so strollers and wheelchairs can use it (Maeil Shinmun, October 16, 2026).
- Tip: Walk this path back to Gugyeong Market from the skywalk instead of taking the bus, and the ride home becomes part of the sightseeing. It’s also a Korail refund QR spot.

7. Dodamsambong in morning mist, and the Seokmun stone arch (sight)
Three rock peaks stand side by side in the middle of the Namhan River: the first of the “Eight Scenic Views of Danyang.” The county especially recommends autumn mornings when mist sits on the water, and the first KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni at 6:27 a.m. gets you there in time (Naver blog, October 28, 2026).
- Price: Free admission; small-car parking 3,000 won (about $2.30); river cruise 15,000 won (about $11.30) for adults (Naver blog, October 8, 2026, citing Korea Tourism Organization data).
- Getting there: About 7.5 km by taxi from Danyang Station (Naver blog, October 28, 2026).

Climb 300 m of stairs upstream and you reach Seokmun, a rock arch shaped like a rainbow that frames the river and fields like a picture. The stairs are long and steep, so take your time. The Korail refund QR code is on the wall of the tourist information center.

8. Black garlic fried chicken and garlic sundae at Gugyeong Market (food)
Danyang is garlic country, so the alleys of Gugyeong Market, open since 1985, are full of garlic food. The star is black garlic nurungji fried chicken: the double black garlic box is 20,000 won (about $15.10), with about a 20-minute wait after you order (Naver blog, visited October 11, 2026). Every alley also has garlic sundae (Korean blood sausage), garlic dumplings and 4,500-won (about $3.40) garlic bread (Naver blog, July 2026).
- Hours: Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., last order 7:30 p.m. (Naver blog, 2026). Hours vary by shop, so check with the merchants’ association (043-422-1706).
- Tip: On weekend evenings, one visitor waited 50 minutes for the chicken (Naver blog, 2026). Order at lunchtime, walk the market, and come back to pick it up.

- Sources: Black garlic chicken double box 20,000 won and the wait, October 2026, Chicken shop hours, Gugyeong Market food and garlic bread prices, July 2026, A 50-minute wait for chicken
9. A night walk through the Suyanggae Light Tunnel (experience)
An old tunnel filled with light. You walk through the light shows inside and the “Secret Garden” of LED flowers outside, and the county pairs it with Yangbangsan Observatory as a night-view course. Spend the day on paragliding and the skywalk, then come here in the evening.
- Price: 9,000 won (about $6.80) for ages 16 and up, 6,000 won (about $4.50) for children (Naver blog, October 8, 2026, citing official data).
- Hours: Opens at 2 p.m.; in October it ran until 10:50 p.m. (tickets until 10 p.m.), closed every Tuesday, so check November hours before you go. A visit takes 40 minutes to an hour (Naver blog, 2026).
- Tip: There are no restrooms inside the tunnel, so go before you enter. On the way, Cheonju Tunnel is a 796 m single-lane road, so wait for the signal at the entrance (Naver blog, 2026).
10. The stalactite trail of Gosu Cave (sight)
A limestone cave and natural monument close to Danyang town, where narrow stairs and metal walkways take you up and down between stalactites and stalagmites. It stays at 14–15°C all year, so in November it’s actually warmer than outside (Naver blog, October 8, 2026).
- Price: Adults 11,000 won (about $8.30), middle and high school students 7,000 won (about $5.30), children 5,000 won (about $3.80), under 4 free.
- Hours: Entry from 9 a.m., last entry 5 p.m., open every day.
- Tip: The stairs are steep and the floor is wet, so wear shoes that don’t slip. It’s a good backup if rain cancels your flight.

Nearby places worth adding
- Sainam: One of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang, a rock cliff rising straight up beside a stream. If the foliage is still hanging on, red trees stand out against the gray cliff.

- Bobaljae Pass: A 3 km winding road seen from the top of a pass on the way to Guinsa Temple, famous for a composition that won a grand prize in a national tourism photo contest. The foliage usually peaks from late October to early November (Joseilbo), so by the second week of November it’s at the tail end. From the top of the pass you see the whole winding road from above.

- Guinsa Temple: The head temple of the Cheontae Order, with large halls stacked up a Sobaeksan valley. It’s in the same direction as Bobaljae, so pair them. It’s far from town, so on a day trip you’ll need a car (Naver blog, October 22, 2026).
-
Danuri Aquarium: A freshwater fish aquarium on the riverside in Danyang town. With kids on a rainy day, it’s another option besides Gosu Cave.

Where to stay nearby
Flights can be canceled on the day because of weather, so staying one night lets you use the next morning as a backup. Stay in Danyang-eup, where Gugyeong Market and the intercity bus terminal are, and operator pickups and the Haengbok Nadeuri Bus are easy to use.
- Sono Belle Danyang (formerly Sono Moon / Daemyung Resort Danyang): 187-17 Sambong-ro, on the Namhan riverside. Remodeled in 2025, with a water park and sauna; good for families.
- Danyang Tourist Hotel Edelweiss: On the Namhan riverside in Danyang-eup, with river-view rooms over the town.
- Deojeun Hotel (더즌호텔): 10 Byeolgok 10-gil, a 3-minute walk from the intercity bus terminal and 2 minutes from Gugyeong Market. The shortest route to market food and buses.
-
Business hotels and motels in Danyang-eup: Around the bus terminal and Gugyeong Market, about 100,000 won (about $75.50) a night. Good value, close to the market and buses.

Most of the extra footsteps from Danyang’s “Visit Year,” which the county spent more than 1 billion won on, stopped at the edge of a slope 664 m up. A few more running steps from there, the ground ends, and the reason people came all the way to Danyang begins.
