Fifty Years In, Han Young-ae Took the Medal and Then Took the Stage

Han Young-ae received the Bogwan (Precious Crown) Order of Cultural Merit at the 2026 Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards on the evening of October 29, 2026, at the Haeoreum Theater of the National Theater of Korea in Seoul. Only one honoree ranked above the Bogwan this year, the late Shin Hae-chul, and she shared the grade with Yoo Jae-suk, musical producer Park Myung-sung, voice actor Park Young-nam and jazz pianist Shin Kwan-woong (Kyunghyang Shinmun). This is her 50th year as a singer (Sports Today; Marie Claire Korea).

Honestly, I’ve been grinning since I read the news. She didn’t just collect a medal: she was also one of the night’s performers, alongside the crossover group La:POEM (NewDaily). A medalist who sings at her own medal ceremony. That’s so very Han Young-ae.

“Is Anybody There?” live on EBS’s Space Gonggam, the song the ministry named first in her citation.

What happened on the night

  • The honor. The ministry named her as the singer of “Is Anybody There?” and “Tuning” (Joyul), marking her 50th anniversary since debut (Seoul Shinmun; Kuki News).
  • The stage. The pre-announced program had her performing at the ceremony with La:POEM (NewDaily; Marie Claire Korea). She also spoke after receiving the medal (OSEN photo; iMBC). The ministry said the ceremony video would go up on the awards’ official social media channels after the event (NewDaily); as of 9:45 p.m. KST, it hadn’t been posted yet.
  • The company. Thirty-six people and teams were honored in all: 10 Orders of Cultural Merit, seven Presidential Commendations, eight Prime Minister’s Commendations and 11 Minister’s Commendations (NewDaily).

Three turning points

  1. From the stage to the microphone. She came up through theater, and you can hear it. On musical stages she was in Line 1 and The Phantom of the Opera (Korean Wikipedia), and every song she sings feels acted from the inside.
  2. 1986, the blues in Sinchon. Sinchon Blues gathered some of the most loved musicians of the era. Her voice, low and smoky, became the sound people meant when they said “Korean blues.”
  3. 1988 to 1992, two songs that never left. “Is Anybody There?” and “Tuning” are the two songs the government named tonight, more than 30 years after she recorded them. Here is “Tuning” on KBS’s Open Concert in 2019.

Why she is so wonderful

Watch her face when she sings. She doesn’t perform a song so much as live in it for four minutes, and then she smiles like she’s surprised you were all still there. A fan’s confession: that little smile at the end is my favorite part of every Han Young-ae clip.

She also lifts up the singers around her. On SBS’s Fantastic Duo 2 in 2017, she sang “Is Anybody There?” with Baek Ji-young, and the two voices, one bright and one dark, wrapped around each other.

Her range has never sat still: folk, blues, rock and jazz, all of it hers (Marie Claire Korea). Since 2017, she’s also hosted Han Young-ae’s Culture Era on Gugak FM (Korean Wikipedia).

Where to listen: Han Young-ae’s albums are on Melon and other Korean streaming services, and her official YouTube channel (Han Young Ae) carries live clips (checked October 29, 2026).

Fifty years, and she’s still the one walking onto the stage at the end of the night. I can’t wait to hear what she sings next.
