October 7, 2026: Baek Ki-tae in Busan

On the afternoon of October 7, 2026, standing on the outdoor stage of the Busan Cinema Center, Hyun Bin said: “I still haven’t let go of Baek Ki-tae.” He had played Baek, the hungry, dangerous lead of Disney+’s Made in Korea, from a first shoot in July 2024 until filming wrapped in March 2026 — almost three years (Sports Today, Oct. 7, 2026). On the same stage, director Woo Min-ho said there would “definitely” be a Season 3, set in the early 1990s (same article). When the talk ended, Hyun Bin walked down off the stage and into the audience (Xports News, Oct. 7, 2026). Beside him were Jung Woo-sung and Woo Do-hwan.

A face that opened three eras

In Korean television, Hyun Bin is that rare actor who has defined an era three times. As “Sam-sik” in My Lovely Sam Soon (2005), his finale drew 50.5%. As department-store heir Kim Joo-won in Secret Garden (2010), 35.2% (Nielsen Korea, nationwide; Xports News). As Captain Ri Jeong-hyeok in Crash Landing on You (2019), 21.7% — at the time the highest rating ever for a tvN drama (Nielsen Korea, pay-TV households; Financial News, Feb. 17, 2020). The romance lead went on to win the TV Grand Prize at the 2011 Baeksang Arts Awards, Best Actor at the 2025 Blue Dragon Film Awards, and Best Actor in television at the 2026 Baeksang Arts Awards.

14.6 million views as of Oct. 25, 2026.

His looks have collected nicknames. The Baeksang Arts Awards’ official channel titled a close-up of him “sculpted handsome man” (jogak minam), and that clip has passed 1.75 million views. Before Crash Landing on You aired, tvN introduced him as “a genius face and a genius actor” (tvN DRAMA official video title). On red carpets it was the suits; on screen, the tracksuit and the army uniform all became talking points.

1.76 million views as of Oct. 25, 2026.

His range is wide: romantic comedy and melodrama, King Jeongjo in a period epic, a North Korean detective in action films, a hostage-taker in his first villain role, independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun, and Baek Ki-tae, a man devouring 1970s Korea. A drama theme song he sang himself hit No. 1 on music charts (Wikipedia), and in September 2026, 23 years into his career, he appeared on a variety show for the first time (Mediafine, Sept. 4, 2026). The first line of that résumé was not glamorous.

2002–2003: a film that never opened, a stalker with no name

Hyun Bin’s real name is Kim Tae-pyung. He was born in Seoul on September 25, 1982, and studied acting in the theater department of Chung-Ang University (Wikipedia). The first project he shot was the 2002 film Shower, but funding dried up, filming stopped, and it never reached theaters (same source).

So his official debut is the 2003 KBS drama Bodyguard, in which he played a stalker — a bit part (OSEN Wednesday Handsome Men’s Club, ep. 13; Wikipedia). It was the kind of role whose name no viewer remembers.

2004: first lead, Ireland

The door opened the next year. In MBC’s 2004 drama Ireland, he shared the lead with Lee Na-young, Kim Min-joon and Kim Min-jung, and the same year made his big-screen debut in the taekwondo youth film Spin Kick (Wikipedia). One year after debuting, he went from bit part to lead.

2005: half of Korea watched “Sam-sik”

In MBC’s My Lovely Sam Soon, which began in June 2005, Hyun Bin played Hyun Jin-heon, a prickly restaurant owner. Kim Sun-a played Kim Sam-soon, a 30-year-old pastry chef, alongside Jung Ryeo-won and Daniel Henney. The show averaged over 37%, and its finale on July 21, 2005, hit 50.5% (Korea JoongAng Daily, July 22, 2005, cited by Wikipedia). Half of Korean households watched the same last episode.

“Sam-sik,” the nickname Sam-soon uses to tease Jin-heon, stuck to Hyun Bin himself, and the press called it “Sam-sik fever” (OSEN). As the drama spread to Japan and across Asia, he joined the ranks of Hallyu stars, and that year he won the top excellence award at the MBC Drama Awards (Wikipedia). He was three years into his career.

2006–2009: the hard roles he chose on purpose

The next year, the film A Millionaire’s First Love (with Lee Yeon-hee) won him a popularity award at the Baeksang Arts Awards. KBS’s The Snow Queen (with Sung Yu-ri) underperformed in the ratings, yet earned him his first Baeksang Best Actor nomination (Wikipedia).

What “Sam-sik” did next surprised people. In the 2008 film I Am Happy, he played Man-soo, a man living with mental illness; it was invited to the 13th Busan International Film Festival. In KBS’s Worlds Within, written by Noh Hee-kyung, he played drama producer Jung Ji-oh (Wikipedia) opposite Song Hye-kyo. In MBC’s 2009 Friend, Our Legend, he took on Dong-soo, the sociopath Jang Dong-gun had played in the original film, and reportedly watched that film 20 to 30 times to prepare (same source).

Had he stopped at “Sam-sik,” he would have stayed a star of 2005. After four years of playing a psychiatric patient, a TV producer and a sociopath, he came back to romance in the winter of 2010. This time he was a department-store boss in a glittering tracksuit.
