The Night Captain Ri Broke tvN’s Record

Part 3 of 3 in The Man Who Opened Three K-Drama Eras: Hyun Bin

Last time: Hyun Bin left the peak of Secret Garden for the Marines, came back to harsh reviews for The Fatal Encounter, and decided to change genres — starting at actor Yoo Hae-jin’s front door.

2017: the 7.81 million that began at Yoo Hae-jin’s house

“Everyone was saying goodbye, but I wanted more time with Hae-jin, so I called him and went to his house. Honestly, I’d never done anything like that before.” (Bridge Economy, Jan. 16, 2017) Yoo replied that he was “grateful he reached out first” (same article). In Confidential Assignment, released January 2017, Hyun Bin played Lim Cheol-ryung, a North Korean detective sent south, doing his own hand-to-hand action. The film drew 7.81 million moviegoers (The Fact, April 1, 2026). The Swindlers (with Yoo Ji-tae and Nana) added 4.01 million the same year. In 2018 he played his first villain in The Negotiation, facing Son Ye-jin’s police negotiator, made the zombie period film Rampant with Jang Dong-gun, and that winter shot tvN’s Memories of the Alhambra with Park Shin-hye and EXO’s Chanyeol (Wikipedia).

February 16, 2020: the 21.7% night

In tvN’s Crash Landing on You, which began in December 2019, he played Captain Ri Jeong-hyeok, a North Korean officer who hides chaebol heiress Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) after she paraglides by accident across the DMZ. The first episode drew just 6.1%, and before it aired the show was even criticized for “romanticizing North Korea” (The Fact, Feb. 17, 2020).

1.98 million views as of Oct. 25, 2026.

On the night of February 16, 2020, in the finale, Captain Ri and Se-ri met again in a Swiss meadow. At that moment 21.7% of Korean households were watching, peaking at 24.1% (Nielsen Korea, pay-TV households, nationwide; Financial News, Feb. 17, 2020). It beat Goblin‘s 20.5% to become the highest-rated tvN drama ever at the time; today it ranks second, behind Queen of Tears (same article; Wikitree). Viewers wrote, “This will be a career-defining drama for both of them” and “Let’s do Season 2 with the same actors” (The Fact, Feb. 17, 2020).

3.77 million views as of Oct. 25, 2026.

Released on Netflix alongside its TV run, the drama exploded even bigger abroad. Japanese media called it “the second Winter Sonata” and dubbed Hyun Bin “the post-Bae Yong-joon,” and Shukan Asahi put him on its cover (Sports Kyunghyang, June 25, 2020). That same month, as COVID-19 spread, he posted a handwritten letter in four languages, then quietly sent 200 million won (about $170,000) to the Community Chest of Korea without telling anyone — not even his agency. The charity confirmed: “Hyun Bin donated 200 million won under his real name, Kim Tae-pyung.” (Xports News, March 3, 2020) When I first heard the news, the only words that came out of my mouth were “of course it’s Hyun Bin.”

2022–2025: from Lim Cheol-ryung to Ahn Jung-geun

Confidential Assignment 2: International (2022) added Daniel Henney and Jin Seon-kyu and drew 6.98 million (The Fact, April 1, 2026); Jin called him “a wonderfully considerate guy” (Star Today, 2022). In The Point Men (2023) he played an intelligence agent opposite Hwang Jung-min. In Harbin, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024, he played independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun alongside Lee Dong-wook, Park Jeong-min and Jo Woo-jin. It drew 4.91 million moviegoers (Wikitree), and on November 19, 2025, it won him Best Actor at the 46th Blue Dragon Film Awards (Nocut News, Nov. 19, 2025).

December 2025–2026: the era of Baek Ki-tae

In Disney+’s Made in Korea, released December 24, 2025, he played Baek Ki-tae, a man who turns 1970s state power into a business, with Jung Woo-sung and Woo Do-hwan. It became Disney+’s most-watched Korean original of 2025 (Wikitree; Parade), and on May 8, 2026, it won him Best Actor in television at the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards. “Every day on set was intense, but within that I think I was really happy and had so much fun.” (Newsis, May 8, 2026)

In April came news that a third Confidential Assignment was in the works (“the script is nearly finished,” per producer JK Film; The Fact, April 1, 2026), and Korea’s National Intelligence Service named him an “honorary counterintelligence agent” (Star Today, April 7, 2026). On September 1, 23 years into his career, he made his first variety show appearance on SBS’s Whenever Possible (Teum-man Namyeon). Young fans on the street recognized Yoo Jae-suk, Yoo Yeon-seok and Woo Do-hwan — but not Hyun Bin. When one child asked for a photo, he took the phone, knelt to their eye level and shot several pictures. After the broadcast, the child’s mother posted the photo and wrote, “When I found out who the photographer was…” (Mediafine, Sept. 4, 2026) I’ve replayed this moment more times than I can count. A world-famous actor kneeling down to take a kid’s photo: there is no lovelier Hyun Bin than this.

Made in Korea Season 2 streamed from September 9 to 23, built around October 26, 1979, the night of President Park Chung-hee’s assassination (MTN, Sept. 23, 2026), and one outlet called it “a drama of Hyun Bin, by Hyun Bin, for Hyun Bin” (same article).

October 7, 2026: Busan again

On October 7, 2026, at the Busan Cinema Center, the open talk ended — the one where the director promised Season 3 “definitely” and Hyun Bin said, “I still haven’t let go of Baek Ki-tae” (Sports Today, Oct. 7, 2026). He stepped down from the stage and strode out into the aisles among the audience (Xports News, Oct. 7, 2026). Watching him go, I’m already waiting for the next season as a fan. For Ri Jeong-hyeok, for Baek Ki-tae, and for whatever face of his we haven’t met yet.
